Horticultural Specialist Customer Advisor – Plymouth Based Garden Centre – £23,000 to £27,000

Ideally, we are seeking people who have a wide range of horticultural knowledge who can assist customers on the shop floor with their purchases and advise as needed.


Applicants will need good previous experience with growing your own food, bedding plant knowledge and be able to advise on shrubs / hedging / etc.


You may have worked as an allotment gardener, market gardener, nursery grower, landscape gardener, or just have a great knowledge of garden plants and garden products. Knowledge of gardening and being able to help customers buy the correct products is essential.


Obviously, we are looking for people with positive, friendly personalities who enjoy customer interaction. The purpose of the role would be to increase the average customer spend on the shop floor each day and locate high spending customers who require attention and assistance with advice. Applicants need a commercial mind and understand the role they have is to increase customer spend.


If successful at the interview stage, we would need to initially assess your ability in the role on the shop floor so starting pay will be at a lower level for a short agreed period until you have proved yourself but quickly progresses to £11 to £13 per hour once we are confident that you have the skills and attitude needed.


The role would suit experienced people with great soft skills and the successful applicants could work either part time or full time between 10am to 4.30pm each day on a rota basis Monday to Sunday. Weekend working will be required as will bank holidays in peak trading periods.

Details of this Role

We have immediate start vacancies for 8 staff at our garden centre / horticultural nursery located at Vinery Lane, Plymouth.


Higher Rates of Pay for Younger People

We can offer the following higher rates of pay:

17 to 18 years of age – £7.00 per hour plus 10% bonus*

19 to 23 years of age – £8.50 per hour plus 10% bonus*

The work is very physically demanding and requires applicants to be on their feet all day, to lift and carry all day, and carry out repetitive manual tasks in our glasshouse as needed. Garden Centre Manager (trainee position) – Plymouth Based – £30,000 to £35,000

This is an hourly paid role which starts at a lower level and progresses quickly to £13 to £15 per hour. Successful management applicants would earn between £30k to £35k per year including bonus payments within 2 years. In the first 12 months you would be able to graduate to this level of remuneration based on a successful training and probation period. We can offer excellent training and are seeking candidates who want to progress their pay quickly over a 12 month period and who are able to take the responsibility for running a retail store.


The successful applicants will work closely with our retail operations management team and receive full training and guidance on store duties, store layout and staff management. We can teach you how to do the job but you must have lots of energy, commitment and enthusiasm to be successful.


Ideally, we are seeking experienced candidates with horticultural experience and knowledge, but we will interview strong candidates with similar retail background and experience. We are seeking managers who are physically fit and able to lead a team of 10 to 16 staff to operate and merchandise our stores. Working hours would reflect your commitment to run a busy garden centre store. Ideally, we are seeking experienced warehouse managers / supervisors who have previous experience of using forklifts, checking in deliveries, handling paperwork, have good office admin skills regarding communication of admin to our office, and are able to manage staff effectively in the picking and pricing of our products. We are seeking managers who are physically fit and able to lead a team of 6 to 8 staff. Payment Area Supervisor / Shop Manager (trainee position) – Newton Abbot Based – £26,000 to £31,000

This is an hourly paid role which starts at a lower level and progresses quickly to £12 to £14 per hour. Successful management applicants would earn between £26k to £31k per year including bonus payments within 12 months. Our garden centre company is seeking an experienced office administrator to join our successful and ambitious head office team and assist with accounts and general business administration. The successful applicant will receive full training and support to deal with the following responsibilities:


• Accounts Assistant – general accounts administration working alongside our account’s manager. Experience with Sage / Payroll / Pensions / General accounting skills would be an advantage.

Horticultural Specialist Customer Advisor – Exeter Based Garden Centre – £23,000 to £27,000

Ideally, we are seeking people who have a wide range of horticultural knowledge who can assist customers on the shop floor with their purchases and advise as needed.


Applicants will need good previous experience with growing your own food, bedding plant knowledge and be able to advise on shrubs / hedging / etc.


You may have worked as an allotment gardener, market gardener, nursery grower, landscape gardener, or just have a great knowledge of garden plants and garden products. Knowledge of gardening and being able to help customers buy the correct products is essential.


Obviously, we are looking for people with positive, friendly personalities who enjoy customer interaction. The purpose of the role would be to increase the average customer spend on the shop floor each day and locate high spending customers who require attention and assistance with advice. Applicants need a commercial mind and understand the role they have is to increase customer spend.


If successful at the interview stage, we would need to initially assess your ability in the role on the shop floor so starting pay will be at a lower level for a short agreed period until you have proved yourself but quickly progresses to £11 to £13 per hour once we are confident that you have the skills and attitude needed.

Garden Centre Manager (trainee position) – Exeter Based – £30,000 to £35,000

This is an hourly paid role which starts at a lower level and progresses quickly to £13 to £15 per hour. Successful management applicants would earn between £30k to £35k per year including bonus payments within 2 years. In the first 12 months you would be able to graduate to this level of remuneration based on a successful training and probation period. We can offer excellent training and are seeking candidates who want to progress their pay quickly over a 12 month period and who are able to take the responsibility for running a retail store.


The successful applicants will work closely with our retail operations management team and receive full training and guidance on store duties, store layout and staff management. We can teach you how to do the job but you must have lots of energy, commitment and enthusiasm to be successful.


Ideally, we are seeking experienced candidates with horticultural experience and knowledge, but we will interview strong candidates with similar retail background and experience. We are seeking managers who are physically fit and able to lead a team of 10 to 16 staff to operate and merchandise our stores. HGV 2 Driver for Horticultural / Garden Centre Company – £10.50 per hour

Our Devon based horticultural garden centre business operates a large nursery in Yeovil growing £3 million of garden plants for sale through our own garden centres. We seek an experienced HGV 2 driver to deliver our garden plants and dry goods between our nurseries and garden centres. The position would be as follows:


1. Driving our company lorries between Yeovil, Exeter, Newton Abbot and Plymouth making deliveries and collections as required each week.

2. Carrying out all duties in line with expected procedures and policies


Applicants with the following Skills would be ideal for this position:

1. Good levels of English – spoken and written

2. Car Driver – our nursery is on the outskirts of Yeovil and there is limited public transport
