Taking care of your fresh cut Christmas Tree

about nordmann fir

Plants Galore stock Nordmann Fir Christmas Trees, which are the Uk’s best selling cut Christmas Tree; they are also the best tree for needle retention.  Its needles are embedded into the branches unlike the Norway spruce.

Their shape is widely regarded as the best. It has a lovely conical shape, and its branches are tiered which is ideal for decorations and lights. Their glossy green branches are a vibrant true shade of green which show up well against a colourful Christmas tree stand.

The needles of the Nordmann Fir are soft, rather than sharp or prickly. They are ideal if you have young children or pets.

The trees are a sustainable crop which are friendly to the environment due to

a)  Being grown on slopes where not many other plants or shrubs grow
b)  Providing a habitat to many animals and birds
c)  The crop being replanted after cutting
d)  Binding the soil, stopping erosion of the slopes

Our Tree Care Advice

Once you have bought your Christmas tree we advise that you trim 1 inch (2.5cm) off the base of the tree. This will open up the stump and allow the tree to absorb water from its stand. If the tree isn’t sat in water after cutting, the stump will reseal and it will have to be recut.

Having a tree stand is important as the tree must always be supplied with water. Christmas trees should not be erected near a radiator or an open fire as this will make the tree dry out rapidly.

An average tree after cutting will drink up to 5 litres of water, then 1-2 litres each day after, depending on the temperature of the room.
