𝐀𝐥𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐑𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐉𝐨𝐲𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟗𝟑𝟑 𝐭𝐨 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓

It is with great sadness that Plants Galore announce the passing of our founder Ricky Joyner on July 12th 2025 at age 91 following a short illness. He is survived by his wife of 69 years Maureen.

Ricky founded our business in 1959 with his wife Maureen.

They started married life as a young couple with absolutely nothing and gradually over many decades they built the foundation of the Plants Galore business we have today. From these small beginnings our family business has managed to become one of the largest horticultural growers and retailers in the south-west.

Ricky was successful due to his ability to think differently, innovate and move with the times, grasp economic restrictions and still create a positive outcome. During the 1960’s and 1970’s, he used his business acumen and horticultural enthusiasm to steer his young family and his very small horticultural business through many occasions of financial difficulty and economic uncertainty to eventually establish a small garden centre and nursery business on the outskirts of Totnes. This became the cornerstone of the successful family business and alongside his family, he guided the business to success through the 1980’s and 1990’s before retiring in 1999.

Ricky achieved everything in his life through hard work, dedication, determination and at times applied simple bloody mindedness not to give in and to just keep going when everything was conspiring against him and Maureen. Together they were a great team and Ricky was a fantastic husband and father to his four children, fourteen grandchildren and all his great grandchildren.

Ricky was truly a great man and lived a quiet life in his retirement growing fruit, vegetables and enjoying the outdoor life he loved. He was incredibly proud of what Plants Galore has now become and would regularly visit the stores and sit and have a coffee and chat to customers. Ricky was a man of his time and a great father and friend to all around him. He will be greatly missed by his entire family and all of us here at Plants Galore.
